Keeper calves - related articles and blog posts

What are keeper calves?

Simply put, keeper calves are the calves that we're going to keep - as opposed to the bobby calves which are sent off the farm.

On our farm we keep about the first 120 female (heifer) calves that are born to cows which were AB mated. We don't keep the male (bull) calves since we're running a dairy farm not a livestock farm, and we don't keep the non-AB female calves (i.e. the ones without proven quality genes).

The keeper calves will be raised on-farm into adulthood so they can later join the main herd as milking cows.
