Cow on the run - related articles and blog posts

Do cows run?

Of course they do! Sometimes...

Cows are not anatomically designed to run - they're designed to walk around munching on grass and other vegetation. But like most herbivores they're certainlly capable of running if necessary.

Milking cows generally avoid running since they have full udders and no reason to go running around the place (i.e. no predators, at least not here in New Zealand).

But dry cows (not in milk) seem to love running down hills for some reason (in fact they almost seem to skip) - especially if they're offered a fresh break of green grass.

Other runners are cows that have recently calved - they wont run if you leave them alone but as soon as you take their calf away they either run to follow you or run away back to where they gave birth.
